Our Investment Philosophy
The Bentley Sustainable Investment Group seeks to run a long-only domestic equity fund focusing on stocks with positive ESG attributes that meet ESG requirements of BSIG members.
By integrating the ESG analysis into the fundamental security analysis, BSIG aims to identify investment opportunities that provide competitive financial returns as well as positive impact on the society at large. The BSIG will utilize a predominantly bottom-up investing approach to allocate funds into various securities that the group sees as the most efficient diversification of the fund in alignment with its mission statement.
The fund’s assets are divided using the benchmark’s sector weightings as a guideline. The stated weightings are discussed by the membership, and deviations from benchmark weightings are decided upon. Reallocation to match desired weightings takes place on a weekly basis, if necessary
The basis of performance measurement is the identification of annualized return in conjunction with annualized standard deviation of the portfolio versus its benchmark. We also look to assess Alpha, Beta, R-squared, tracking error, and Sharpe ratio of the portfolio.
In general, BSIG aims to exceed the return of the specific benchmark on an annual, risk adjusted basis. The performance of the fund is the responsibility of the fund members and managers. It is the duty of the Investment Committee to provide council, advice and investment oversight. The performance of investment options and their continued appropriateness given the investment objectives of the fund will be reviewed on a periodic basis, but no less frequently than twice per year. The fund will present to the Investment Sub-Committee of the Board of Trustees at least once per year.
